Continuing Education Credits

The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) requires pesticide license holders to complete continuing education as part of the license renewal process. These requirements help ensure applicators stay current on safety, regulations, and best practices that protect people, property, and the environment.

OPCA offers and promotes educational opportunities designed to help members meet these requirements while gaining practical, relevant knowledge they can apply in the field and in their businesses.

ODA License Renewal Requirements

ODA pesticide licenses are renewed every five years through recertification, which can be completed by earning the required continuing education credits or by retesting.

Credit requirements by license type:

  • Commercial / Public / Consultant: 40 total credits

    • Maximum of 15 credits per year

  • Private Applicator: 16 total credits

    • Maximum of 8 credits per year

  • Apprentice: 8 total credits

    • Must include 4 core credits

Core Curriculum Requirement
A portion of required credits must be core credits, which focus on safety, regulations, and foundational pesticide knowledge. These credits are mandatory for all license types.

Renewal Timing & Process

  • Licenses expiring June 30 can be renewed online starting in mid-May

  • Licenses expiring December 31 can be renewed online starting in mid-November

  • Renewals are completed through the ODA MyLicense system

License holders must complete all required credits before the end of the five-year certification cycle.

If Requirements Are Not Met

If continuing education requirements are not completed by the renewal deadline, the license holder will be required to retake and pass the applicable exams to regain certification.

OPCA encourages members to track their credits regularly and take advantage of OPCA-hosted technical, business, and safety sessions throughout the year to stay compliant and informed.
